Nutritional Counselling

AdvanceMD nutritional counselling is not a diet, it is not intended as a fad weight-loss program (although most people will lose significant weight when following it), nor is it an eating plan to stay on for a limited period of time. Rather, AdvanceMD nutrition counselling is a way of teaching you how to select and prepare foods based on scientific knowledge of how they can help your body maintain optimum health.

Normally, inflammation is part of a healthy immune response. When you have an injury or infection there is an orchestrated onslaught of cells and chemicals that heal and fight infection. This could be in the form of onsite redness, pain, swelling and/or heat ~ think sprained ankle.  Unfortunately, there is also a quiet, not so helpful side of inflammation. Chronic inflammation occurs within the body and is known as the ‘silent killer’ as you can feel fine but still have high levels of inflammation. Chronic inflammation is often the root cause of chronic degenerative diseases such as cancer, diabetes, depression, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and has been found to be more damaging to your organs than scientists originally thought. While we cannot change our genetic predisposition for disease, we can do something about this other major player

The average Canadian diet includes far too many foods containing refined carbohydrates, chemical preservatives, and omega-6 fatty acids, which are found in processed and fast foods, and far too few foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such is found in cold-water fish or supplements. When that balance is out of whack, inflammation can set in.  Chronic, low levels of inflammation cause continuous damage to tissues and cells, mostly through oxidation ~ think of how rust eats through metal; that is oxidation.

Proper nutrition can optimize the environment of cellular aging and division. In doing so the new cells will be as healthy (or healthier) than the ones they are replacing. In short, this is how we slow down the aging process.

Learning how specific foods influence the inflammatory process is the best strategy for containing and reducing long-term disease risks – that is the premise of AdvanceMD nutrition counselling.
